Tablet tooling Bakelite relief and Tapered dies

Tablet tooling

In Tablet tooling Bakelite relief and Tapered dies are two important inventions which are used to remove the Tablet compression problems .

Bakelite relief

Bakelite relief means tips of lower punches are made sharp. As we know Lower punch travels the full length inside the die In case the blend has low melting point than it will adhere to the walls of dies and as the punch enters inside die again and again the temperature will go on increasing and

  • sticking will occur
  • Lower punches will damage
  • Dies will damage from inside.

So ,to overcome the problem lower punches are manufactured with Sharp tips termed as Bakelite relief as the punches come up in the dies these sharp tips will remove any adhered material on the die wall . Thereby preventing the punches and Dies from damage as well as product quality .

Tapered dies

As we know the Entrapment of air inside the dies leads to many problems like Capping and Lamination . Entrapment of air generally occurs in Flat Dies in which there is no space for air to escape the compression cycle so , the scientists came up with the concept of Tapered dies . In Tapered dies Top of dies is slightly more wider than middle . it is optional to choose taper on both sides of die or one side . The tapered dies has many benefits like

  • Problems due to entrapment of air like Capping and Lamination rectified .
  • The Tapered dies installed presses operates at less temperature because there in not much friction involved due to Taper . The air is released via Taper. so, Friction between punches also reduce and there is less damage to punches as well as Cams .

However despite of advantages Tapered dies has certain Disadvantages also

  • It creates problem of Flashing (Burrs on Tablet Edges) if Blend is compressed between the clearances of punches and dies .
  • If blend reaches in the clearance it will create problems like increase in temperature of punches and dies and sticking .
